What To Consider In Chess Collection

If you are new in chess set collecting, here are some things you may want to consider. After years of collecting myself, I have made a list of things to consider as I tend to forget things myself over time.

  • Have a budget per set. Yes, chess sets, especially antique ones, tend to cost an arm and a leg (heck even a foot if you know what I mean). So set yourself a budget and stick to it. Include on that budget the restoration expenses and some odds and ends you would have to spend if you do in fact buy that set. If the main chess set falls well within the budget but the restoration costs mean that you have to pay an extra $190, then move on to your next set.
  • Only but from reputable sources if you are solely looking for antique chess sets. Because fakes do exist, especially for the expensive ones. So make sure you buy from really good sources.
  • Modern pieces are also good buys, especially if you find them attractive. Hard core antique heads may frown upon modern pieces but if you like it and it appeals to you, do not hesitate to buy it.
  • Read about chess sets. This will not only expand your knowledge and taste, it will also give you a great source of information where you can anchor your collection from. SO head on to your local library and bring those reading glasses or head on to you nearest bookstore and buy yourself some chess literature.
